  • Look for end of winter sales, now is a good time to buy coats, winter clothes and shoes.
  • Network with other budget minded friends, inform each other about the best deals in town.
  • Vinegar can be used to kill grass and weeds on sidewalks and driveways.
  • You can make your own spray on wrinkle releaser by adding a small amount of fabric softener to water. I bought the expensive stuff first, and then used that spray bottle again by filling with water and a capful of fabric softener
  • As light bulbs burn out, replace them with fluorescent bulbs. They cost more initially, but in the long run they will save you money. (A word of warning about the dollar store variety- they give off blue light, probably only suitable for a garage or back porch light. The more expensive ones give off a soft white light.)
  • Do you want to get out of debt? Listen to Dave Ramsey. To find a radio station in your area that carries his program, go to www.daveramsey.com.
  • Plan your weekly menu according to the grocery ads. “Loss leaders” are usually on the front and back of the weekly grocery ads. These are the lowest prices, used to entice you into the store. Plan your weekly menu according to what’s on sale.
  • Wal-Mart honors competitor’s ads. Take the grocery ad with you to the check out; tell them you have a competitor’s ad for peaches, for example. They will charge you the competitor’s price. However, they will not honor buy one get one free, and the item has to be the same.
  • When grocery shopping, think in terms of the unit price. Most stores have the unit price on the shelf. For example, it you are comparing the price of cereal, and one box is .19 cents an ounce and another is .21 cents an ounce, get the first box. Packaging can be deceiving; sometimes the bigger package is cheaper, sometimes not.
  • When using coupons, buy the smallest size allowed by the coupon. It will result in more savings because the unit price will be smaller.
